02 MAY. Maranello. There was palpable relief at Scuderia Ferrari this morning, as this years Team Principal, Mattia Binotto, discovered that they are not as awful as they look.
According to a report at Motorsport.com Binotto says that Mercedes has “a slightly better car” despite the Scuderia being a whopping 74 points behind their main rivals, with the season yet to even kick off proper.
Our source close to the hapless Italian squad told us today:
“After seeing Mercedes bag four 1-2 finishes on the bounce, Ferrari thought that the title battle would be lost by the Hungarian Grand Prix in early August”
“However, team analysts have found that Mercedes are only a bit better than them and they reckon that they can hold on until sometime in September before throwing in the towel with around half a dozen races left to go”
We asked Merc boss Toto Wolff to comment. He did not answer our call but probably said something along the lines that his car was not very good, that every weekend was a real struggle and that it was going to be ever such a tough year.
