Edinburgh, Scotland. Despite the fact that Scotland relies heavily on England just to keep the lights on at night, the tradition is that whoever the English are playing at football, the Scots will support the opposition.
So, there was more than… a little surprise when a local wandered into an Edinburgh branch of Ladbrokes, and staked £140,000 on England to beat the ski resort of Andorra in Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier.
With the odds on Andorra winning a massive 200-1, the punter won a measly £675 - less tax. A spokesman for Ladbrokes said; “I don’t know what’s less believable, a Scotsman backing England or someone risking 140 grand to win peanuts.”
Rumours that the mystery punter worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland are as yet unproven…
