Argentine driver to be auctioned to help pay USF1 debts

Argentine driver to be auctioned to help pay USF1 debts

If you have a penchant for office furniture, printers, shelving and more than a few sets of spanners, then get yourself over to the online auctioneer who is flogging off the ‘assets’ of the USF1 team.

Apart from what appears to… be enough stock to fill a mid-sized IKEA store, you could go for Lot 27, a Weber barbeque (left), Lot 400, a Dyson vacuum cleaner or maybe Lot 426, a bottle of champagne – all seemingly unused.

However, it is Lot 497, Argentine racer, Jose Maria Lopez, that has caught the eye of many, with the ex-GP2 pedaller listed in the catalogue as being ‘in good condition’ and ‘ready to race in any national one-make saloon series’.

Lopez, who parted with $1 million for the pleasure of becoming a non-F1 driver, has a reserve price of just $500 though if he fails to reach this figure the auctioneers are prepared to throw in the Dyson as a sweetener.

At least this is a bit more believable than USF1...

According to reports coming out of New Zealand, which is a country a long way away, somewhere near Australia, there could be a new team in F1 for 2011 -  a powerboat team.

Kiwi company, Shotover Jet, have announced on their… website that they are in the final stages of preparing an entry for next season, based it would seem, purely on the fact that fluid dynamics are similar to aerodynamics.

Of course, the story probably has nothing to do with a bit of desperate publicity in the form of an April Fool’s Day joke in the current economic downturn, but just in case they are serious, Virgin, Lotus and HRT had better look over their shoulders…

USF1 problems reverberate across the Atlantic

USF1 problems reverberate across the Atlantic

The shut down of the USF1 project has already started to have major implications on this side of the pond, with the closure of the UK’s first NASCAR team.

Following the announcement last year that USF1 were to create, base and… run a team in a country that could not stand F1, Yorkshire businessman, Dudley Ormanroyd, thought that there must be something to this mad plan that the rest of the world could not see and so decided to set up a UK based NASCAR operation.

Ormanroyd said today; “USF1 were our inspiration, we thought that if two seemingly intelligent blokes thought running an F1 team from America would work then why should it not work in reverse? We really thought running a NASCAR team from Barnsley was a good idea.”

He went on; “We did everything they did, we got a nice HQ (pictured) a posh website, we put out press releases about our preferred driver choices every bloody week in the Barnsley Chronicle, we got one of the lads to put up videos on YouTube of us stood around the workbench looking at spanners and stuff but it was not enough, we simply could not find sponsors or build a car, so it’s the end of a dream, I’m really gutted.”

Australian Grand Prix organisers today confirmed that Simple Minds would be in attendance during the race weekend. At first it was thought they were talking about Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve who are rumoured to be turning up but it… turns out to be the wrinkly rockers from Scotland, who will play a post-race concert.

The band have said that they will dedicate their 1982 hit ‘Promised you a Miracle’ to Campos and USF1 should either of arrive Down Under while Force India will get a rendition of ‘Alive and Kicking’ should they beat their current accountancy problem.
