Raikkonen’s Renault Effect

Raikkonen’s Renault Effect

The news that Kimi Raikkonen will not be joining the Renault F1 team next year has not gone down well with the French companies car dealers.

Wolverhampton dealer, Darren Owens, 43, told us yesterday that since the news of Raikkonen’s possible… move broke last week, interest has increased considerably, with one couple expressing an interest in a Modus and one man even taking away a leaflet on the Twingo.

Said Owens; “Shifting cars in the recession is not easy, it’s even more difficult when those cars are Renault’s so we need all the help we can get and the prospect of Kimi being a Renault driver was very exciting.”

He added, “We have had posters up around the place of Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov and frankly Petrov looks like a zombie, which tends to put people off, while Kubica’s fizzog scares small children, at least Kimi is bearable to look at.”

“We are all very dissapointed.”

Petrov too porky for points?

Petrov too porky for points?

According to Germany’s ‘Auto Motor und Sport’ magazine, Renault’s Vitaly Petrov has been told to lose weight. Although Petrov is about the same height as team mate Robert Kubica, he is about 10 kilos heavier, which costs him about three… tenths of a second per lap. Renault were not too fussed about this until they received a copy of a video (see below) of a typical Petrov family meal and decided that action had to be taken before an expensive reshape of the R30 would be called for. A team insider said that Vitaly had been told to go to the gym and train until he ‘hit the wall’.

Good sentiment but maybe an unfortunate choice of words for a Renault driver?

Bahrain, Thursday: Ryanair to sponsor Kubica?

Bahrain, Thursday: Ryanair to sponsor Kubica?

While most F1 drivers were soaking up the sun in Bahrain today, Robert Kubica was not having such a good time. He departed as planned from Warsaw to Bahrain but had to change ‘planes in Florence and finally ended up… in Dubai. Minus his luggage.

Still, when he replaces Felipe Massa at Ferrari next year at least he’ll be able to afford a private jet…

Kubica falls off the back of a lorry

Kubica falls off the back of a lorry

According to Auto und Sport magazine, BMW Sauber’s Japanese Grand Prix weekend has not got off to a good start, after a delivery truck on its way to the paddock managed to clip a low bridge, dumping eight engines on the ground.

BMW… boss, Mario Theissen, said “It was the worst damage to F1 equipment that we’ve ever seen.” Obviously he’s never had Nelson Piquet jnr on the payroll.

In a cruel coincidence, another truck delivering Robert Kubica to the paddock, also managed to drop him, with the Pole landing flat on his face from a height of ten feet. Initial observations were that the results were something of an improvement.

Ferrari name 21 candidates for Monza

Despite enduring the season from hell and having the modern day equivalent of Taki Inoue in one of their cars, Ferrari have at least managed to retain a sense of humour. With every man and his dog after Luca Badoers… drive for the Monza race, Ferrari have published the list of drivers they have been linked with, although they eerily say they have not included “some suggestions from the afterworld”. Here we go…

A as in Fernando Alonso

B as in Jules Bianchi, Mirko Bortolotti and Sebastien Bourdais

C as in David Coulthard

While BMW Sauber bosses have vowed to continue modifying the F1.09, Robert Kubica is said to be far from happy with their ideas so far…

Monte Carlo and bust…

Monte Carlo and bust…

Monaco, Thursday. BMW Sauber driver, Robert Kubica, has splashed out and bought himself a world rally car, a Skoda Fabia no less, for “private tests and fun” with suggestions he may contest the Rally of Poland after next months British… Grand Prix.

It is probably fair to say that the Polish star is not having the best of seasons so far, after ending 2008 as a serious championship contender. Now, Kubica and team mate Nick Heidfeld, are “fighting at the wrong end of the midfield” as one press release described it, “or at the back” – as anybody else would.

After letting listeners, know about the “disastrous” handling of his car over the radio before winding up 16th in practice one, he got only as far as Casino Square in the second session, where his Beemer gave up the will to live in a cloud of smoke and flames.

Rumours that, for the rest of the weekend, Robert has asked the stewards for dispensation to use the Skoda instead, are believed to be unfounded.

World of Sport - BBC helps ugly stars

After winning the Grand National, jockey Liam Treadwell was slightly taken aback when BBC presenter, Clare Balding, suggested live on TV, that he could now get his awful teeth fixed with the winnings.

Balding, who herself has a face more suited to radio than television, was inundated with complaints but it now appears she may have done the boy a favour as dentists are lining up to fix his gnashers for free.

Maybe she could also interview F1 star, Robert Kubica (above) and point out his challenging facial features, then the Pole may at least get his nose sorted for free if nothing else.
