Williams design a bit of car that can survive a Monaco weekend

According to his latest entry on Twitter, HRT driver, Karun Chandhok has been contacted by the Williams F1 team to confirm that despite him running over Rubens Barrichello’s steering wheel at 90 mph, that the £50,000 bit of kit survived… and still works.

Not only did Chandhok run over the wheel, discarded by an angry Rubens Barrichello after his shunt at Massenet, but he dragged it all the way down to the entrance to the tunnel where it came loose, only to be run over again, this time by Karun’s team mate, Bruno Senna.

After seeing two of his car’s totalled in the race, Sir Frank knows that at least one part is rock solid..

Damon Hill wanted book thrown at Michael Schumacher

Damon Hill wanted book thrown at Michael Schumacher

Reports from Monaco suggest that Michael Schumacher was very lucky to only get a twenty second penalty for his illegal move on Fernando Alonso at the final corner of Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Race steward, Damon Hill, pushed hard for much sterner… penalties including a custodial sentence for the German, for what he might have called a ‘typically underhand action’ although we cannot be sure he even thought of saying that.

Apart from the Alonso move, Damon allegedly also asked for several other offences he saw over the weekend to be considered:

On many occasions the Mercedes driver was seen driving at 150 mph on Monte Carlo roads, most of which have a maximum speed limit of 30 mph.

Schumacher was also cited by Hill for not using his indicators or for slowing at pedestrian crossings.

Hill added that Schumacher’s misdemeanors where not confined to his driving but there were also offences in the paddock, where he said he saw him wearing ‘silvery clothes’ and  heard him talking with ‘a distinct German accent’.

The other stewards managed to convince Hill to ‘let it go’ and apart from the crime of overtaking another driver, all other charges were dropped.

Silverstone is not the only saviour for the British Grand Prix

Silverstone is not the only saviour for the British Grand Prix

F1 has an impressive list of glamorous venues, Monaco, Singapore and Monza to name but three but now you can now add one more. Glasgow. Paul Morrison, a Scot who puts on the ‘F1 Rocks’ concerts has told the ‘Daily… Record’ that he is trying to convince Bernie Ecclestone he needs a Scottish GP, and with Donington hanging in the balance, now could be the time.

Morrison says; “We have the roads for it” (which you have to admit is a start) before he rather confidently predicts “We will see a Formula One race in Scotland, certainly within the next decade.”

The venue of choice would appear to be Glasgow. A quick look at the map over a pint of McEwans, shows that a circuit could be knocked up quickly, with a route taking on the boy racers along the Clydeside Expressway, before returning for a blast down Argyle Street finishing on the Govan Road.

Finishing in Govan (pictured) is a brave choice but business analysts say it would be good for the area, possibly doubling the number of people in employment from two to four.

Coulthard has a hotel in Monaco - Button has a pub in Frome..

Coulthard has a hotel in Monaco - Button has a pub in Frome..

There is jumping on the bandwagon and then there is ‘The Frome Flyer’ pub, on Jenson Avenue in Frome, Somerset. In case you didn’t know, Frome is hometown to Jenson Button, in much the same way that Stevenage is… proud to claim Lewis Hamilton as one of its own, despite the fact that these two choose to live in Monaco and Switzerland instead.

The Flyer is one of those pubs that has been unfortunate enough to have a budget hotel clamped onto it in an attempt to survive but according to an entry on the Real Ale Hunter website it is still a tavern worth a visit.

Said one customer; “The meals were good and at very reasonable prices. I had a pint of Butcombe Gold which was on form and then I finished with the guest beer which was Wadsworth 6X”.

Exciting stuff eh?

Note: We did consider using a picture of ‘The Frome Flyer’ but it is drab beyond belief, so here is a picture of Jennifer Ellison with a pint of beer – what more could you ask for?

Monaco “not the final straw for BMW” says Theissen

Much of the entertainment – such as it was, during the Monaco Grand Prix, was provided by the BBC’s commentary team. First, Eddie Jordan proclaimed Ralf Schumacher as being the greatest race driver of all time, before Martin Brundle revealed…  that ex-Spice Girl, Gerri Halliwell, was in fact Bernie Ecclestones daughter. Then, after what was a particularly excitable performance from him, Jonathan Legard announced to the world that after the race the drinks would be on John Button at his local boozer ‘The Ship and Castle’ in Fontvieille Harbour. The rush of the impoverished and sunburned fans camped out on the hill overlooking the circuit must have resembled a big pink avalanche…

Still – at least the Beebs decision to host their Monaco show from a boat bobbing around in the harbour did not have the same disastrous consequences as ITV’s ill fated effort in 1996, when pundit Simon Taylor went greener and greener before the viewers eyes, before spending the rest of the race reacquainting himself with his lunch.  During the race itself, Nelson Piquet startled everybody by having an accident that was not his fault, after being rear ended by Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi. Nelson, 23, huffily complained in a TV interview about these ‘young kids in F1’.  Pot, kettle and er..black.
