It’s trophy time!

It’s trophy time!

The mother of sometime HRT racer, Karun Chandhok, has decided that for some reason, Grand Prix Diary deserves a trophy and so she has commissioned this rather beautiful sculpture in the shape of a samosa for us.

Mrs Chandhok is a… long time follower of us on Twitter and no doubt saw our petition to get her son back into F1 which has peaked at, er… 595 signatures.

She will also have seen that we have made sure her son gets his hands on some silverware (actually it is ‘plasticware’) as he and his HRT team won the ‘Grand Prix Diary New Teams Quiz’, held on the weekend of the Singapore GP.  We will meet up with Karun after the end of the season and we’ll swap our trophies, though as you can see from the pictures below, we are fairly sure we will be getting the better deal…

(PS: Mrs Chandhok will be launching our F1 Cookery Corner soon with her favourite ‘Chandhok Family Chicken Curry’. Watch this space.)

Indian F1 team to come to Chandhok’s rescue?

Indian F1 team to come to Chandhok’s rescue?

Distraught at seeing his fellow countryman, Karun Chandhok, booted out of F1 (albeit temporarily) by Horrid Racing Team, an Indian design student, Nikhil Talal has decided to step in and help Karun out.

Nikhil has constructed a revolutionary F1 car made… entirely out of cardboard boxes and sellotape. Provided he can rustle up the €16 million deposit, Talal, 31, hopes to pip Jacques Villeneuve to the coveted thirteenth team slot for 2011, with Chandhok as number one driver.

The car has already been tested outside Nikhil’s house in Bangalore and while initial results were at first encourging, detailed analysis of the telemetry sadly showed that it had no rigidity to speak of, so was a real handful in the corners, it went all soft in the rain and dodgy build quality meant that every time the wind got up something would fall off.

Still, after what Karun has had to drive so far this year this thing should only be an improvement…

Chandhok not so sure about HRT Silverstone upgrade

Chandhok not so sure about HRT Silverstone upgrade

While the cockpit on his upgraded HRT car is certainly roomy enough, Karun Chandhok is not so sure about its aero effiency. Still, unlike team mate Bruno Senna, at least he’ll be driving something this weekend.

Beer, Sex and a Smoke – Jaime is the new James Hunt!

Beer, Sex and a Smoke – Jaime is the new James Hunt!

There are three F1 drivers who enjoy nothing more than uploading photograph’s on to Twitter. Karun Chandhok (@karunchandhok) is the artistic type, posting well shot pictures of whatever building he happens to be passing at the time.

Timo Glock (@realTimoGlock) will upload a photo of anything he is about to eat, while Jaime Alguersuari (@jaimealguersuar) has what can only be described as Twitter-Tourettes, snapping at anything and everything he comes across.

However, his latest piece of work ‘Boy in a bedroom’, taken during a promotional visit to Santo Domingo, is hot favourite to scoop this years prestigious ‘Turner Prize’. One of the judges, Kempston Hardwick, said “The juxtaposition of the beer, representing the anticipation of the sex with super sensitive condoms along with the almost phallic qualities of the post-coital cigar is pure genius”.

We ask Jaime what he thought his chances of winning the prize were only to discover that five minutes after entering the room all of the contents of the box had been used.

Williams design a bit of car that can survive a Monaco weekend

According to his latest entry on Twitter, HRT driver, Karun Chandhok has been contacted by the Williams F1 team to confirm that despite him running over Rubens Barrichello’s steering wheel at 90 mph, that the £50,000 bit of kit survived… and still works.

Not only did Chandhok run over the wheel, discarded by an angry Rubens Barrichello after his shunt at Massenet, but he dragged it all the way down to the entrance to the tunnel where it came loose, only to be run over again, this time by Karun’s team mate, Bruno Senna.

After seeing two of his car’s totalled in the race, Sir Frank knows that at least one part is rock solid..

Chandhok must start Chinese Grand Prix from car park

Chandhok must start Chinese Grand Prix from car park

Due to an issue with his team looking at (or looking for) his car’s gearbox on Friday night, Karun Chandhok has been handed a five place drop on the grid for Sundays race.

However as he qualified dead last anyway, officials… felt that the punishment could not be served so they have insisted that the popular Indian starts from the circuit car park.

However, the other drivers were not happy, saying that the grip in the car park was actually quite good, so Karun now has to start in the women’s parking section (left), meaning he is likely to get stuck behind a lady attempting to get a Nissan Micra into a spot the size of an aircraft hangar as the lights go out for the race start.

Karun Chandhok has China in his hands...

Not much worries Karun Chandhok, which given the dreadful car he has to drive every other weekend is a good thing, so when he was told that Twitter was banned in China he still took along his trusty Blackberry in… the hope of keeping his loyal army of followers up to date with the weekend’s happenings.

Thankfully Karun was met at the airport by ‘three very sweet people’ who told him how to get around the ban (the Chinese authorities have probably had them shot by now) and since then he has been sought out by many members of the paddock to make sure they can still send their Tweets from Shanghai.

Chandhok has already been busy, musing on everything from how awful Shanghai airport is, to the horrendous decor of local restaurants and their puny portions, accompanied by a picture of team mate Bruno Senna looking ready to throw up.

If they let him back in next year it will be nothing short of a miracle.
