Sushi’s loss is Formula One’s gain

Sushi’s loss is Formula One’s gain

This time last year, Kamui Kobayashi was running out of funds and with no drive on the horizon, was preparing to return home to work in his fathers sushi restaurant.

Now however, after his performance in the Japanese Grand Prix, he… is an F1 superstar, though he does have a somewhat unique driving style which appears to be - to only overtake in corners and do it with your eyes shut and then see what happens.

This strategy worked well for him in Japan where he barged pass driver after driver in the race though Sauber engineers simply could not believe how their car stood up to such punishment.

Concerned that in 2011, alongside the plainly bonkers Kobayashi, they have a rookie in the form of Sergio Pérez, the design team are planning on a more robust approach for next years C30…

Brundle shocks early morning Britain

Brundle shocks early morning Britain

F1 viewers in the UK, struggling to cope with the 5am start for the Japanese Grand Prix, spluttered into their tea, when an innocent comment by Nick Heidfeld was seized upon by a naughty Martin Brundle, complete with accompanying hand… gestures.

Under fire BBC executives were just relieved that there were no children or pensioners up at that time of the morning.

Jenson still on course for title...eventually

Analysts have worked out, that at his current strike rate, Jenson Button should wrap up the drivers title at the Spanish Grand Prix next May. Despite finishing in a lowly eighth in Japan, Button is still ‘not worried’ about his dwindling… championship lead. Yeah right.

Force India's secret weapon for Suzuka

While Adrian Sutil did end up topping the time sheets for Fifi in practice two for the Japanese Grand Prix, it was actually his mechanics who set the fastest time in the sodden first half hour when they set a… paper boat off down the pitlane. The boat, a scale model of team owner, Vijay Mallya’s Indian Empress yacht, was going a treat past the Williams pit until a marshall stepped on it. Spoilsport.

Kubica falls off the back of a lorry

Kubica falls off the back of a lorry

According to Auto und Sport magazine, BMW Sauber’s Japanese Grand Prix weekend has not got off to a good start, after a delivery truck on its way to the paddock managed to clip a low bridge, dumping eight engines on the ground.

BMW… boss, Mario Theissen, said “It was the worst damage to F1 equipment that we’ve ever seen.” Obviously he’s never had Nelson Piquet jnr on the payroll.

In a cruel coincidence, another truck delivering Robert Kubica to the paddock, also managed to drop him, with the Pole landing flat on his face from a height of ten feet. Initial observations were that the results were something of an improvement.

Tottery twosome from Tokyo still trust in Toyota

Tottery twosome from Tokyo still trust in Toyota

A pair of Japanese pensioners are coming to terms with the fact that for 2010 they may actually have to follow a good F1 team. According to Toyota’s ‘Push’ magazine, Mr and Mrs Kidosaki are devout fans, some might call… them manic obsessives, who have been following the team all over the world for the last seven years. Japanese pension funds are obviously doing better than most.

In the interview at Toyota-F1-Push.com, Mrs Kidosaki, always wearing her huge, trademark Toyota sun hat and badge that looks like she prized it of the back of a Prius, gushes about the progress the team has made and how the journey to the top step of the podium can be “accomplished by the continuous, enthusiastic and spiritual support” of her and the old man.

Mrs K may well be the barmiest half of the marriage but there is no denying her optimism. Seven years without a win and just three races before Toyota jack it all in and she still thinks they are going to win one.

Bless.
