LETTER FROM AMERICA

LETTER FROM AMERICA

Apart from supposedly encouraging some NASCAR style wheel banging at the head of the race, the ‘winner takes it all’ system was apparently going to make following the title race easier for the fans at home.

My NASCAR watching buddies don’t share my interest in F1. To them it’s just little whiny cars with little whiny drivers. Instead they prefer big loud cars driven by big loud drivers. NASCAR’s ‘simple’ points system awards 185 points for a race win and awards a whopping 34 points for being classified 43rd. F1 refugee Juan Pablo Montoya is quite familiar with this end of the points scale. Something that might surprise Juan is that bonus points are also awarded for leading a lap as well as for the most laps led in given a race.

Despite the arithmetic involved and possibly even some reading, the typical NASCAR fan has no problem following his favorite driver and team’s progress over a 36 race season – provided of course that the requisite reading includes lot’s of pictures.

Consider that the F1 season has half the number of races as NASCAR and a points system that rewards only the top eight finishers and ask what do the recently proposed changes say about F1 fans?

Good job they canned the idea…
