14 March – Bahrain

Well oil be – Jenson is still the best!

Well oil be – Jenson is still the best!

Despite being the worst performing of the four world champions in the Bahrain Grand Prix, Jenson Button still leads the Castrol Driver Rankings with race winner Fernando Alonso not even in the top 10. That makes sense then.

Kimi makes surprise Bahrain appearance.

Kimi makes surprise Bahrain appearance.

While it was to be expected that Nelson Piquet snr would not take part in the F1 champions photo-shoot, given all the unpleasantness involving Nelson the younger and that wall, organisers had hoped that Kimi Raikkonen would turn up, especially… as he wasn’t scheduled to be crashing anything this weekend.

However, Grand Prix Diary can reveal that Kimi did join in the F1 sixtieth anniversary celebrations and can be seen in the photograph below, sitting on Bernie Ecclestones right disguised as an arab sheikh. Kimi is renowned as a master of disguise, once entering a speedboat race in Finland dressed as a gorilla, but this latest get up has to be his most impressive stunt yet.

Bahrain, Sunday: It’s official, modern day F1 drivers are a big bunch of softies.

Bahrain, Sunday: It’s official, modern day F1 drivers are a big bunch of softies.

Many F1 fans enjoy seeing the drivers on the grid just before the start of a race, getting ready and giving last minute interviews to the likes of Martin Brundle.

However, before the start of the snore-fest that was the Bahrain… Grand Prix, nearly all of the drivers were in the pitlane or their garages, taking part in a bizarre protest.

Apparently the drivers are miffed that due to a restriction on the number of people cluttering up the place, their personal trainers/physios/umbrella holding lickspittles are not allowed to be on the grid, meaning that the poor lambs are separated from their butlers for up to 10 minutes.

Maybe these overpaid, spoilt, pampered softies ought to take a leaf out of a certain 80 year old racer’s book, who’s major annoyance at falling down a 50 ft lift shaft is that having to take it easy for a bit was proving ‘a bit of a bore’.

Bahrain, Sunday: Saubers pocket money for points system

According to Switzerland’s ‘Blick’ newspaper, Peter Sauber has said that despite being a bit short on the sponsor side, he will still pay every team member a points related bonus.

The bonus is believed to be 25 Swiss francs per point… (£15) which back home in Switzerland won’t even cover the cost of a bar of Toblerone

That’ll encourage the boys next time they need to put in an all nighter on the car…

Bahrain, Saturday: Nigel Mansell to become an F1 steward?

Bahrain, Saturday: Nigel Mansell to become an F1 steward?

Following the appointment of Alain Prost, Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert, Alex Wurz and Heinz Harald Frentzen as temporary race stewards, the FIA are reported to have requested that Nigel Mansell is to be the next driver to become poacher turned… gamekeeper.

Mansell is said to be keen on the job and as he still owns the book on excuses for race disasters, the FIA reckon he’ll be perfect for the role.

However, the drivers trade union, the GPDA, are said to be less than impressed at the prospect of a two hour long Brummie lecture every time they do anything slightly wrong…

Bahrain, Friday: Karun Chandhok finally gets to see his HRT car

After a day looking at an empty space in the garage, Karun Chandhok finally gets to see his HRT car and while it has a feel of home about it, he is not at all impressed.

Bahrain, Thursday: Ryanair to sponsor Kubica?

Bahrain, Thursday: Ryanair to sponsor Kubica?

While most F1 drivers were soaking up the sun in Bahrain today, Robert Kubica was not having such a good time. He departed as planned from Warsaw to Bahrain but had to change ‘planes in Florence and finally ended up… in Dubai. Minus his luggage.

Still, when he replaces Felipe Massa at Ferrari next year at least he’ll be able to afford a private jet…
