German newspaper ‘Zeit’, has today reported that the cost of the advertising space on the front of Niki Lauda’s famous red baseball cap, has rocketed up from the equivalent of 100,000 euros in 1976 to a whopping 1.2 million euros… this year.
According to our business editor, this is not down to inflation or the cost of living but the fee goes up annually in line with the amount of opinions Lauda spouts over the year.
2008 was a bumper year for Niki who provided 2,949 opinions (some of them asked for) in print, television interviews and in other media. There were 924 having a go at todays drivers, 845 about modern technology, 487 about racing ‘not being as difficult as it used to be’, 226 about the FIA and 467 other assorted gripes and moans.
